Idolatry, Statues, Relics, Saints, and assorted nonesense

Reflecting on Huguenots iconoclasm during the tragic French Reformation, ruthlessly crushed by papal bulls and edicts (March of 1569 the pope issued a bull calling for the annialation of all Huguenots--and the blood flowed), we attended a sung Eucharist at Canterbury cathedral this morning--not significant difference, 39 Articles notwithstanding. Notice the emty niches at Bayeux, empty because zealous Huguenots pulled down the idols. Ironically the RCC only remembers the slaughter of stone images, not the slaughter of 10s of 1000s of men women and children.

At devotions this morning I urged all of us to be honest about our own idols, tougher on the things we set up in place of Jesus only. "We are all idol-making factories," not just the other guys.

Exodus 20:3-6 ESV / 274 helpful votes

“You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
